The Ends and the Means

“A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
but a just weight is his delight.”

– Proverbs 11:1

God cares about your absolute integrity in every aspect of life. The Bible often speaks strongly of God’s interest in the way we conduct business. Abomination and delight are powerful words! In a time before goods were pre-measured and packaged automatically, the integrity of the weights, scales, and balances used by buyers and sellers in the marketplace was critical. It was incredibly easy to cheat and take advantage of others, but God had no tolerance for it! God has no place for dishonesty in His people! No shading of the truth, no cutting of corners, no ends justifying the means. God hates it! It is an abomination!

God never just cares about end results, He cares about how we achieve them. Was God honored by how we did business, interacted with coworkers, supervisors, subordinates, and customers? Was He glorified by how we used our time “on the clock”? As the people of God, Christians are called to always aim for the right end and always use the right means to accomplish that end. We must strive to glorify God with everything we think, say, and do.

In our world, we often try to compartmentalize our “religious life” and our “secular life”. We confine thoughts of God to a certain portion of our life, but leave Him out of others. That’s unbiblical. Christian integrity should affect every aspect of our lives including work, play, school, family, friends, community involvement, civic engagement, and, of course, church life.
