“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:21
For Jesus, His name is His mission. Before He was born in Bethlehem, God declared through an angel what His Son was coming to do. The child was to be named Jesus – Yeshua in the original language. Yeshua means “YHWH (The Lord) Saves” or “YHWH Is Salvation”.
The eternal Son of God stepped out of glory, taking on human flesh, in order to save us from our sins. That was His purpose for coming and His name communicated that truth from before He was born. God was actively intervening to rescue humanity from our sins. God was sending a Savior to reconcile sinful, rebellious mankind to Himself.
Jesus did many things during His earthly ministry. He taught the words of God. He did the works of God. He healed the sick, blind, deaf, and those who couldn’t walk. He cast out demons. He controlled weather, rearranged molecules, multiplied food, and trampled the waves. He raised the dead to life. All of it combined to reveal the true extent of the Lord’s salvation.
The Lord’s salvation isn’t merely about forgiveness of sins. It’s about truth, grace, healing, relief, love, and abundant life. It’s about reversing the curse of Genesis 3 and renewing God’s good creation. The Lord truly saves and Yeshua – Jesus – is that salvation. #FollowJesus
